Humboldt Del Norte High School Sports League

Humboldt Del Norte Swimming has been limited to schools with swimming
facilities.  The league has been represented by Eureka, Arcata, 
McKinleyville and Del Norte High School in the past.  Proposition 13 
created financial hardships on this sport.  As a result our swimmers have 
had to compete individually and qualify in the North Bay League.  This has 
caused many hardships on these dedicated athletes and their families.  
An Special thanks is in order for our Local Swim Clubs and their coaches.

1997/98 North Coast Section Swimming Championships: Swim Club Coaches: Redwood Swim Club - Amon Emeka, Humboldt Aquatics - Paul Mazarelle Competed at NCS Championships: Gina Loechi (E) 100 Backstroke & 200 Free; Carly Ross (A) 50 & 100 Freestyle; Brooke Larson (St B) 200 Ind Medley & 100 BS; Lea Jones (E) 100 BS; EHS Relay Team (Loechl,Jones,Yarnall & Hutchison)

Twenty local high school swimmers and 26 Ukiah High School swimmers participated in the Eureka High Invitational at College of the Redwoods on Saturday April 8, 2000. In the first swim meet Eureka High has hosted in decades, Ukiah was first in points followed by Eureka, Arcata and McKinleyville. North Coast teams will travel to Willits on Tuesday for their next competition.

Carly Ross and Ashley Vrieze of Arcata High made automatic NCS qualifying times. Ross qualified in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle, Vrieze in the 100-yard backstroke. Arcata and Eureka girls both made NCS consideration times in all three relay events.

Swimmers achieving NCS consideration times in individual events were Cary Ozanian (EHS) in the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard medley, Erica Botkin (EHS) in the 100-yard butterfly, Megan Yarnell (EHS) 100 the 100-yard breaststroke, Shanti Sattler (EHS) in the 500-yard freestyle, Carly Ross (AHS) in the 100-yard backstroke, Ashley Vrieze (AHS) in the 100-yard butterfly.
