Owen Hooven is a life-long resident of Humboldt County, having been born and raised in Blue Lake. He attended Blue Lake Elementary School, beginning his athletic career at Arcata High School in 1984. He was a Varsity letterman in football, wrestling and track & field. In football Owen played offensive tackle, and was a starter both his junior and senior years.

Owen went on to attend College of the Redwood, starting both years on the line where he earned 2nd team All-Conference honors. In the Spring of 1986 he received a full-ride football scholarship to Oregon State University. As a senior at OSU he was Honorable Mention All American and PAC-10. The Dallas Cowboys drafted Owen in the 7th round in 1988. His shoulder was shattered during the pre-season, placing him on the injured reserve list. Owen spent the 1990 pre-season with the Philadelphia Eagles. During the 1991 season, Owen played starting right tackle for the Orlando Thunder of the World League of American Football.

Although on a leave of absence from CR this football season, Coach Hooven has coached both the offensive line ('92 & '93) and the defensive line ('94 - '96).

Owen lives in McKinleyville, and is engaged to be married to a local girl next summer.
