First Grade - Mrs. Holverson's Class
First Grade is a year of a building responsibility
and independence. We provide a positive, safe, caring environment
which nurtures the intellectual, physical and emotional capacities
of each child.
First grade has a very strong, standards based
Language Arts program. Our Houghton Mifflin Reading program
is built on a solid foundation of research in teaching practices.
It ensures beginning reading success, with thorough development
of oral language skills, phonemic awareness, letter recognition,
phonics and blending skills, and high frequency vocabulary
recognition. The program includes a comprehensive collection
of literature rescues to meet the independent reading needs
of all students.
Our Sadlier math program meets the new California
State Standards. Using this program students can progress as
quickly as they can or as slowly as they must. First grade
topics to be studied include: number recognition, addition,
subtraction, place value, time, money, geometry, measurement,
fractions, graphing, and introductory concepts in statistics
and probability.
Science is a study that excites students interest
while training minds to test hypothesizes. Children are naturally
curious about life, asking "wonder" questions, testing
materials and the laws of nature as they play.
Social Studies
in First Grade allows students to quickly move beyond their
own areas to broaden their sense of place. Our program gives
students new insights into their communities and helps them
make connections to the larger world.
Our integrated art lessons
in First Grade are designed to promote intellectual, social,
physical, emotional, and creative growth. Field trips throughout
the year support all curriculum areas. |
