Drug & Alcohol Prevention Programs
Lynn Garric, Safe Schools Project Director, Sonoma County Office of Education
Funding is received from the California Department of Education for the Humboldt County Office of Education (HCOE) to assist districts in developing and sustaining evidence-based Alcohol, Drug, Tobacco and Violence prevention programs and activities. HCOE contracts with the Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE) to share the services of a Prevention Coordinator. Local districts receive assistance from the Safe & Drug Free Schools Coordinator with any prevention or reporting issues related to SDFS funding and legislative requirements. This includes support in developing Tobacco Use Prevention Education grant applications and renewing Tobacco Free Certifications.
Tobacco Use Prevention & Education
The Humboldt County Safe & Drug Free Schools program works to build partnerships and collaborations between local school districts with county health department's tobacco control programs, alcohol and other drug programs, mental health programs, and other community prevention and intervention initiatives.
Violence & Bullying Prevention
HCOE offers prevention trainings and workshops on topics such as bullying prevention, safe school planning, alcohol and drug intervention and utilizing the CHKS data. See the bullying prevention presentation, and a Safe School Plan template.
California Healthy Kids Survey
The HCOE provides support to districts in their biennial administration of the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) and in analyzing the survey results and disseminating them to the public.
